That is absolutely astonishing yes.

Big question of course- did Cytori accommodate Lazard to have known short addresses fill the book of the secondary, which is most likely, since in the past the shorts were not afraid to let the stock go as far as $2 and they still did not cover.

I do smell the usual work of BIG MONEY having it their way again and Calhoun playing right up their alley, as usual.

Board moderator and Site-owner. I still regret the day I started analysing the prospects of MacroPore (now Cytori) back in 2004- a left-over from the tech-bubble at that time from the century change in my portfolio- and became addicted to Cytori´s fat cell technology.

In my mind fas, the bigger question.... is the short side willing to start all over again building the short position with any sign of a firming stock price ?
Or did they cover because they saw their time may be limited ?
Or again...they just had the chance to book a nice profit with a large block of shares.

A little of all the above may be true.

1. CYTX has been very good to them with their ace in the hole our CEO...why not short price spikes again.
2. Their time may be limited is a far trickier factor...certainly positive cash flow isnt coming in 2013 but at least a bump in sales due to increased translational use may start to show a firmer bottom. UK and Japanese reimbursement for breast indication is anyones guess. Then there is the specualtion that Dean will finally do something about CC's annual failures....I am not in this camp and will believe this when I see it.
3. Booking the profit certainly makes sense...the Seaside deals did not allow for shares in mass to be covered all at once. Its been awhile since a large chuck of shares has been floated in the open market all at once. Seaside was piece meal and in the past we had private placements with companies or individuals/groups. This was a real opportunity for them !!! Also note the PPS rose into the close of this latest reporting period seemes to indicate some open market covering may have been taking place as well.

Anyway...just some additional thoughts on the matter.

CYTX is a high risk play for both the longs AND the shorts. They did well to reduce exposure. The reduction of the short position shows that they were anxious and that the risk reward equation was not in their favour to hold on for greater falls in the stock price. BARDA shows that there is substance to CYTX and the potential for bullish catalysts must have weighed heavily in the decision to close the short position.

The shorts will no doubt pressure CYTX again but it will be from a substantially higher level. Possibly after a piece of good news that has been a long time comming..... CE approval in CMI ...... UK breast reconstruction reimbursement ..... successful partnership deal etc ........

CYTX will not have to be hugely profitable from day one for its stock to soar ...... all it needs is enough cash to not require further dilution.......... this thing can turn on a dime .......... its all about sentiment ......... short side is scared?

Well I have been saying for a very long time that CYTX needs to raise more money than they think they need but since management has never been able to get out of its own way they have been stuck with small semi-annual raises and I am not convinced we have seen the last.

Sentiment and turning on a dime are somewhat valid points however in this new realm of regerative medicine there are no markers for easy valuation. Lets take for example a traditional biotech with a promising cancer drug. Things like market size, rates of adoption, regulatory pathway and reimbursement are know factors and as data emerges can easilily be applied at the appropiate stage for valuation.
CYTX is a big unknown !!! This is one reason why the first indication to receive reimbursement will not only give needed cash flow but be the first standard marker for other factors that can be applied to valuation markers for future indications imho. Data on larger trials also should help.

As for shorts being scared...I would use this term...they covered and we will see where they go from here soon enough.

With more shares ,comes increase in float and the shorts will get bolder.I think they will milk this for all they can get. lot's of play before March conference call. With no reason to cover , the closer to the call they get with nothing happening the vultures will circle, feast and then fly away quickly with a profit. They have been right so far and enjoy rewards as does our mangement team. Just the long term holders suffer.
